Planning Department
The Planning Department is responsible for assisting City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission in all aspects of comprehensive and current planning in Glenwood Springs. This includes overseeing development and implementation of the city’s Comprehensive Plan and other long-range planning endeavors. The Department is also responsible for processing land use applications in accordance with the City’s Development Code, Title 70 of the Municipal Code. Updated Development Code Goes Into Effect August 16, 2018
In 2016, Clarion began the process of updating and redrafting the city's Development Code, following an assessment of the code. The new development code was adopted on August 2, 2018 and is updated frequently.
Assessment and Code Update
In June, 2015, the City contracted with Clarion Associates, a national land-use and real estate consulting firm, to review the City's development regulations (Municipal Code Title 070) and to recommend changes in the formatting and substance of the existing code. Clarion's tasks included suggesting changes to better streamline the City's existing land-use review processes.

6th Street Corridor Master Plan
The 6th Street Corridor Master Plan provides a vision for redevelopment and streetscape improvements that are expected to occur along the 6th Street corridor over the next 5, 10 and 20 years.

In December 2015, the City contracted with studioINSITE, a Denver-based urban design and planning firm, to create a blueprint for future development and redevelopment along the 6th Street corridor. This planning effort was a direct result of the dramatic changes that are expected to occur following the multi-million dollar demolition and realignment of the Grand Avenue-State Highway 82 Bridge over the Colorado River.
