Glenwood Springs City Manager Debra Figueroa has implemented a Declaration of Local Disaster Emergency effective immediately and as a result will close its public buildings as of Saturday, March 14, 2020. This closure includes the Community Center, City Hall, the Police Department Administrative office, the Fire Department Administrative office, and the Art Center and will remain in effect for two weeks. The City will re-evaluate the closure on March 27, 2020. This is a proactive measure to slow the potential spread, impacts, and damage of COVID-19.

On Tuesday, March 10 at 6 PM, the City of Glenwood Springs will be hosting a virtual town hall event to discuss city-wide infrastructure and 2020 projects. The town hall will take place in City Council Chambers at City Hall located at 101 W. 8th Street, but residents can also join the discussion on their phone or by streaming it online.

The City of Glenwood Springs’ Financial Advisory Board (FAB) is now accepting grant applications from not-for-profit, government, or tax-supported entities. All applications are due on March 27, 2020 and have a target award date of May 14, 2020.
Quarry Habitat and Wildlife Impacts Quarry Habitat and Wildlife Impacts
The proposed expansion of the Mid-Continent Quarry near Glenwood Springs would have profound negative impacts on surrounding habitat and the wildlife that depends on it, including elk, deer, bighorn sheep, golden eagles and numerous species of migratory songbirds. That’s according to an analysis by the highly regarded Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) of the public lands that would be affected by the proposed mine expansion.

Permit reservations to visit Hanging Lake for the 2020 shuttle season will be available for purchase on February 1 at www.visitglenwood.com/hanginglake. The 2020 shuttle season will largely remain unchanged following successful operations in the 2019 season.

The Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA) currently uses a local commercial parking lot in south Glenwood Springs to accommodate required breaks for bus drivers. RFTA was informed on January 15 that this long-time practice would have to end by midnight on January 21. The City of Glenwood Springs has identified the northside of the Blake Gate as the only emergency parking spaces that would work for RFTA drivers and buses. The Blake Gate will remain closed to the public during this time but RFTA buses will be able to pass through and employees will be required to lock the gate after each use.

The City of Glenwood Springs has filed a motion to intervene in Rocky Mountain Resources’ (RMR) lawsuit against Garfield County government that is currently before state court in Garfield County. RMR’s lawsuit alleges that Garfield County has no regulatory authority over operations at its Mid-Continent Quarry, located just a half mile from Glenwood Springs city limits, because the federal government also regulates the site.
