[ARCHIVED] CONE ZONES: Chip and Seal Road Maintenance Updated 8/23/18

Cone Zone

The City of Glenwood Springs has begun several road maintenance projects. The first portion of road work was mill and overlay on some downtown streets and Mount Sopris Drive. The second portion will be chip and seal work across the city throughout August.

Chip and Seal Project

The entire Chip and Seal project is a four-part roadway reconditioning process. The first step will begin on August 3 and will prepare roads for the chip seal process by street sweeping and crack sealing. This step will continue through the entire project just days before each chip seal application begins.

The Chip Seal process is three parts:

  • The roadways are swept again and then a hot mix layer and small stone chips are applied to the roadway surface.  These chips will sit on the roadway for approximately 7 days to settle into the hot mix and create a new wear surface for the roadway.
  • After 7 days the crew will return to each area and remove any excess stones from the surface and surrounding curb and gutter areas (pick-up brooming).  This will leave a new stone surface exposed.
  • After 2 additional days of exposure, the surface of each roadway will be sprayed with a light coating of the hot mix again to fog seal in the stone.

All roadway impacts will be rolling one lane closures; full lane road closures are not anticipated during this process.  The 7 day stone lay down period will leave loose gravel on the roadway so bikers and motorcycles need to be extra careful. Passenger vehicles need to stick to speed limits and easement turning movements to keep from kicking up rock chips onto other cars.

Below is the updated schedule for work, barring weather delays, for each area of the City that is being affected with this work:
