[ARCHIVED] Glenwood Springs Fire Department reports improved fire-insurance rating.

Glenwood Springs Public Protection Class rating by Insurance Services Office (ISO) will change on March 1, 2016 to a 2/10, which is a marked improvement from the previous 4/10.

A class 1 rating means excellent fire protection and a class 10 indicates the ISO’s minimum standards are not met.

The rating comes from examining multiple areas of operations related to the structural fire suppression delivery system. Approximately 50% of the score is determined by fire department training, equipment, station location and other elements controlled by the fire department. Another 40% is derived from the water supply system in the community, and the final 10% is from communications, or the call handling system. The improved scoring represents continuous improvement over the last decade in all of these areas and validates the ongoing efforts of fire department leaders, water system operators, county communication system partners and neighboring fire departments to provide the best service possible.

The new “2” classification will apply to all properties within 5 road miles of a fire station while anything beyond those five miles will remain at a class 10. When it becomes effective, this new rating may net a reduction in fire insurance costs for homes and businesses within the area served by the Glenwood Springs Fire Department.
