27th Street Bridge crews were able to erect the girders for the new traffic bridge and install the new pedestrian bridge ahead of schedule. The bridge, S. Grand Ave. intersection, Atkinson Trail and the Roaring Fork River are open for normal traffic.
Thank you for your patience as crews made progress on these major structural milestones. There is still a lot of work to do, but this was a big weekend for the project.

Next Monday, 27th Street will look a lot different. We are thrilled to see the project progress through these important milestones. This is a big weekend for all of us with crews working day and night to expedite construction of these valuable pieces of community infrastructure. Please allow ample travel time through town and thank you for your patience.
Closures and Impacts
There are a lot of moving parts and shifting impacts starting Thursday, simply put follow detour signage and flagger instructions. Thursday morning you can cross 27th Street to get out to CO 82 and Thursday afternoon you can cross to get to Midland. If you’re unsure – plan to use 8th Street across the river.
Wed., July 24
Wednesday evening, a portion of S. Grand Ave. between 27th St. and 29th St. (in front of the current pedestrian bridge staging area) will be closed to through traffic approximately 6-9 p.m. while crews load and stage the pedestrian bridge in preparation for Thursday night’s installation.
Thurs., July 25
Before the full bridge closure, City of Glenwood Springs crews will be completing mill and overlay asphalt work on 27th Street between Colorado Highway 82 and S. Grand Ave. The bridge and the S. Grand Ave. intersection will close at 7 p.m.
Beginning at 6 a.m., crews will set up traffic control in the area and 27th St. between CO 82 and S. Grand Ave. will be eastbound traffic only. All westbound 27th St. traffic will be rerouted via 23rd St. for access to the bridge.

Mid-day, traffic control will shift and 27th St. between CO 82 and S. Grand Ave. will be westbound traffic only. All eastbound 27th St. traffic will be directed to use 23rd St. or S. Grand Ave. to Buffalo Valley for access to CO 82.

Bridge Closure – Use 8th Street Detour
Beginning at 7 p.m., 27th Street Bridge, S. Grand Ave. intersection and Atkinson Trail will close and remain closed through the weekend. During this closure, the Roaring Fork River will have periodic holds during the day and full closures at night. Crews will be working through the night all weekend. Expect heavy construction machinery and large lights at night. The bridge is expected to reopen at or before 6 a.m. on Mon., July 29. This closure is weather dependent.

The 27th Street traffic detour will be via 8th Street during the closure period. See detour map below. There will be no through access at S. Grand Ave. and 27th Street (Buffalo Valley is not an alternate route for CO 82). Significant traffic delays are anticipated, so plan ahead. The pedestrian and bicyclist detours for 27th Street Bridge and Atkinson Trail are via the Old Cardiff Bridge or via the 14th Street Bridge. Local business and residential access will remain open with detours.

River Access
The contractor anticipates keeping the Roaring Fork River open during the daytime with intermittent holds and delayed put-in times for safety during critical overhead work. Full river closures are expected at night. Follow posted signage and flagger instructions. River users should be prepared to eddy-out at 3 Mile Creek. Call before you float to hear the latest river status, 618-5379.
Safety Reminders
For safety reasons, individuals are asked to avoid the area during these operations. Due to the constrained site area and the complex nature of operations, there isn’t a great spot for safe public viewing. The construction team will take photos and videos for online viewing. Trespassing or loitering in the area will not be tolerated.
Motorists are reminded to always move over for emergency service vehicles. Schedule and routes are subject to change and are weather dependent. Updates or changes to the schedule will be announced via ConeZone and will be updated on the project information line, 618-5379.
