There’s a New Bridge in Town: 27^th Street Bridge Open to Traffic

Work continues on pedestrian bridge and roundabout

As of 3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2019, the new 27^th Street traffic bridge is open for use. The new pedestrian bridge is also open with temporary connections.

“With the completion of the new traffic bridge we are going from one of the worst rated bridges in the state to a completely new bridge,” said Jessica Bowser, assistant city engineer. “This would not be possible without the patience of our community, project neighbors and our funding partners. We are very grateful to all – special thanks to Federal Highway Administration’s Off System Bridge Funding, the Department of Local Affairs, Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District, and Garfield County.”

“This bridge will serve Glenwood Springs for years to come,” said Bryce Jaynes, Colorado Division Manager for Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction. “Thank you to all for your patience so far and for your continued patience as crews continue work on the pedestrian bridge and the roundabout. This is an important milestone for the project and the community and we still have a lot of work ahead.”

On the new pedestrian bridge, bicyclists should dismount for safe use until final connections are complete next week. The north leg of the 27^th Street and S. Grand Ave. intersection remains closed as crews make progress on roundabout construction. Business access is open via the north S. Grand Ave. entrance at 23^rd Street.

Pedestrian Bridge Work – Tuesday, Sept. 24

The new pedestrian bridge is open with temporary connections. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, pedestrian and bike access will be closed all day as crews work on additional connections, with the final connections being completed this fall. Pedestrians and bicyclists can use Old Cardiff Bridge or the 14th Street Bridge as alternate routes.
