[ARCHIVED] Glenwood Springs to Begin Roadway Rebuild work at Glenwood Meadows

Cone Zone

Major phase 1 work to begin June 5; Project anticipated to be complete in November

The City of Glenwood Springs and general contractor Johnson Construction are scheduled to begin phase 1 roadwork for the Glenwood Meadows Roadway Rebuild project on Monday, June 5.

During phase 1, West Meadows Drive (the entrance between Target/Big 5 Sporting Goods and Lowes) will be closed between Midland Avenue and the north side of the West Meadows roundabout. Alternate business and residential access will remain open through the East Meadows entrance (by Petco) or either of the two Wulfsohn Road entrances. Left turns are not permitted from East Meadows Drive onto Midland Avenue; please use the Wulfsohn Road exits for left turns out of the Meadows subdivision. Motorists should plan for reduced speeds on Midland Avenue and some travel delays, especially during busy business hours.

During phase 1 the Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA) will reopen the Wulfsohn bus stops to the public and remove the temporary one outside of Chili’s.

Phase 1 is anticipated to be complete in early July and is expected to be the most impactful to access in and out of the subdivision.  This phase will replace the island, replace sidewalks, sidewalk crossings, add a full length right and left turn lane to the site, and replace the asphalt with a heavy asphalt section design.

Additional Project Information

The Glenwood Meadows roadwork will have five phases and is anticipated to be complete in November 2023, weather permitting. By phasing the project, the City hopes to minimize travel impacts.

  • Phase 1 – West Meadows Drive from Midland to the roundabout
  • Phase 2 – Wulfsohn from East Meadows to Market Street
  • Phase 3 – Wulfsohn from West Meadows to Market Street
  • Phase 4 – West Meadows from Wulfsohn to the roundabout
  • Phase 5 – East Meadows entrance, the east Wulfsohn entrance, and the Community Center bus stop

“None of this is going to be easy, but we need to complete the work due to the road failures in the Glenwood Meadows subdivision,” said Public Works Director Matt Langhorst. “There are several sections of roadway in this area that will be full road replacements, cutting down deep enough to install a full roadway section. In some areas, crews will also complete concrete pan, curb and gutter and scupper storm system replacements, parking stall mill and overlay, and crossing and sidewalk replacements.”

The 2023 Glenwood Meadows Roadway Rebuild project will cost $2.75 million dollars. City Council has dedicated $2.4 million dollars in Coronavirus (COVID) relief funds (awarded to the City in 2021 and 2022 in the General Fund) along with $350,000 from the Street Tax Fund to replace this infrastructure.
