Project Status

The South Midland project is progressing nicely and has been very busy with several scopes of work happening simultaneously in the middle of the day. This all takes coordination and coordinated traffic control. Shotcrete activities are ongoing on the new soil nail retaining walls. Good news, construction crews have completed all the rockfall mitigation work. Crews are working on installing a new storm drain to improve utilities in the area. The construction work is on schedule and going according to plan.

Traffic Control

Construction activities are permitted on the weekends. Crews regularly work on Saturdays, and work is also permitted on Sundays as needed. This helps to make up weather days, and weekend work allows for crews to have longer work days with lane closures without interrupting our peak hour traffic which helps project productivity.

RBW is the Black Hills Energy contractor also working in the South Midland corridor to install a gas line. For information on the Black Hills Energy Work, visit their project webpage here. Overall, Gould Construction has done a good job of sticking to the permitted lane closure hours. There is a very tight work area for everyone involved in the two projects, and safety is our first priority.

Wait times seem to be consistently tracking between 5 – 10 minutes. Our goal is to keep motorists moving whenever we can.

Excavation and Rock Removal

Gould Construction, the contractor for the project, is responsible for all export materials, including rock removal. Approximately 7,000 cubic yards (CY) of “export,” including rock will be removed and recycled from the project and some stones will be used in landscaping materials. Most of the materials are taken to the Gould Construction materials yard to be processed or recycled.

Community Communications Collation Meeting

The next meeting with our volunteer community group is tomorrow, May 12. If locals are interested in participating or joining, please email southmidlandproject@gmail.com. The Community Communications Collation is a volunteer committee that helps the project team understand any localized concerns.
